Appearance at the Quai des Bulle!

Hello,

Just a note to any French fans out there, I will be appearing at this years Quai des Bulles comic festival in St. Malo, France. I believe I'll be floating between the Ankama and Comix Buro booths, with new books at both booths.

Stop by and say "Bonjour!" :-)

See the Festival's website for details. .

For all my American friends and fans, I'll be posting pics from the festival. In addition to the festival there will be an art show, the release of my new sketchbook, as well as a slew of interviews (7 at my last counting) going on during the show, so I'll have plenty to share once I'm back home.

Talk to you soon!

Thanks!
Mike

Much love for Oms en Série!

Hey everyone,

Well, as you know my first french BD is officially in French comic shops. The reception has been absolutely amazing! I'm so bowled over by the enthusiasm for the book that I can hardly put it into words, English or French! I'm so honored and flatter by how the French fans have welcomed me and can't thank them all enough!

I'm going to write a post about the whole experience, as well as a few process posts, when I have some time. But for now I'll leave you with this incredible list of great reviews for the book, sent to me by series writer JD Morvan:

This is just the tip of the iceberg, as the book is also being talked about in various popular French news paper and magazines!

Best,
Mike

24 Hour Comic Day!

Heyo!

I'll be taking part in 24 hour comic day tonight! I'm a late addition to their plans, but I'll be at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design tonight along with a gang of other artists to make us some comics!

The PCAD website

The 24 Hour Comic Day website

I'm pretty excited as I've wanted to take part in this event for years but never could. Unfortunately I won't be at the event all 24 hours, but I will be there tonight with pencil and pen in hand!

Can't wait.

Best,
Mike

Sketchbook preview!

Hey everyone!

The fine folk at Attakus and Comix Buro are teasing out some images for several upcoming sketchbooks, including mine!

I will post info on how to order the book as soon as I get it. I'm hoping I can get a batch of my own to offer a special edition sketchbook with an original sketch inside each book.

Check out the Attakus Facebook page for more info on their line of sketchbooks.

Best,
Mike

Forcing creativity with the help of Monsters and a Dictionary

Every year around this time I get to thinking about a project I did a few years back called Monster-A-Day, or M.A.D. for short. Done purely for  the fun of it, and as a way to challenge myself. At the time I felt overworked and worried it would make my art stagnant. I wanted to force myself to, well, be more creative.

So my wife and I went through a dictionary and found any word that even remotely sounded like a name and I came up with a monster for that name. I did this every day for a year, with a color one on Sundays.

In the end, it didn't catch on with fans so much, but that wasn't the point. The point was to open up creatively, to have fun, and to see if I could actually do it.

And I did. High five to myself :-)

So, I think I'll revisit some of those ol' Monsters over the course of the month. For some of you long time followers it'll be a nice trip down memory lane, and for those of you new to the blog I hope you see a side of my work that maybe you weren't aware of.

Enjoy!
Mike
