ORIGINS art - line and color comparison pt.2

Some folks are asking what the line art looks like before I add the color, so I figured I'd post a side by side comparison. You can see the small tweaks to the art, as well as just how much the color helps flesh it out, when you can see the two versions together.

I'll post more comparisons soon.

Best,
mike

I am interested on how you are doing the line art without using any lines to indicate the shading changes. Such as Scarlett's face in the second panel. The line art is just one face but the final version has a shadow on her face. Not sure if you make notes on the pages so you remember (or the colorist knows) where you intended the light source to come from, etc.

Always great seeing the line art.

I colored this stuff, so it was just part of the final art to me. I think just years of studying the figure has me hardwired to think of figures three dementionally, so the modeling kinda comes naturally. I think more about the color, and color temperatures, then the modeling it's self. I studied to be a painter in college, and had tons and tons of figure drawing there, which helped to figure out the planes of the face and figure.

If you wanted to you could always just look for photo refs to use as a guide. It would be time consuming, but after a while you'd sorta memorize it and wouldn't have to depend on it as much.

Hope this makes sense.

Oh no, that totally makes sense, I figured that was the case when you are coloring it yourself, so much more easier to know what you are going to do with the colors. I guess I was more implying (or at least attempting poorly to) was if when you were colored by someone else, if you had to make more notes than normal or shift your style knowing they would just get the line art and not know where you intended the holding line for the colors, etc.

You've been doing some great work on this book, Mike - really nice clean lines and distinctive colors. The grenade sequence ******* rocks.

Patrick - I try hard to let colorists do their thing. From time to time I will give notes on something, but I find that leads to more frustration then anything since I have something so specific in mind that there is no way anyone else can know what I want. I'd basically have to DO it, then say "DO THIS", which would just piss people off and waste lots of time ;)

Simon - Thanks, man! Really looking forward to Dark Rain! Looks awesome so far!
