I've decided to stop taking it easy on the comics industry, and break it wide open in 2009.

Hope you don't mind. ;)

I'm crazy excited to start, and wish I could show you the amazing designs I just got from Tony for the new Alien/Human hybrid that are introduced in this arc.

Leopoldo Romañach

While I was in Florida last week we went to the Daytona museum. We'd been there once before, and there was a section devoted to Cuban artists that I wanted to revisit. There was this one painting I had to see again - "Italian Peasant".

The artist is Leopoldo Romañach, who lived from 1862 till about 1951. There isn't a lot of info about him online, but it sounds like he had pretty minor acclaim with his work. He won a Bronze metal in a French exhibition, and was in a few shows in Europe and Cuba - picking up a few medals here and there.

His work has a great Diego Velázquez (One of my favorite painters) quality to it. Nice find in a little museum.

Here are two of his paintings in the gallery.

I'll post more art from the museum soon.

Mighty B

I tried out for the Mighty B comic for Nick. I didn't get it, but I had a hell of a lot of fun trying! Here are some of my sketches from the try out.

It's good I didn't get the gig, cause really...my schedule is stupid busy right now. I mostly tried cause my kids and I dig the show, and Bill Wray (who works on the show) is fucking awesome.

Sturgeon River preview

Speaking of up coming projects, here is the only one I CAN say for sure is coming - my next graphic novel with UMBRA writer Steve Murphy. This one is called Sturgeon River, a coming of age story that is set in the 70's. It tells of a night of teen aged vandalism, and how it affects these four friend's relationship. Really touching stuff, believe me.

Oh, and it's a true story! Forgot to mention that part.

Very different from my earlier books, it allowed me the opportunity to stretch my legs a bit and even incorporate some abstract elements into my work.

I'll show you guys more in the coming weeks.

best,
Mike

PS - Murph has been showing previews over at his blog too, if you're interested,

Hawthorne holiday cards 2008

Hey everyone,

Every year I make a holiday card for close family and friends. It's one of the highlights of the year for me. I really love making them and people seem to love getting them. I swear I get more compliments on these cards then I do for any comic I may be working on!

This year I decided to offer them to all of you fine folks. I'll be printing up three, maybe four, designs and selling them in bundles of 12 and 24. Envelopes will be included, of course. We're also thinking of offering them in other languages.

These will be offered exclusively through my Etsy store, and the plan is to have them available by early next week.

So, keep an eye out.

Best,
Mike

Loomis!

I swung by the York Emporium today and found this gem by the teacher of teachers, Andrew Loomis! Man, I'm going to eat this thing up over the next few weeks. Loomis is one of those guys that truly forgot more about drawing and painting then most of us knew to begin with.

Here's a few pics from the book.
