Live art demo, partying, storm troopers, and free art!

 Hey!

Tomorrow we  celebrate the 25th anniversary of my favorite comic shop, Comix Connection!
We have big plans in store (no pun intended) for the party. The biggest being that artist Dirk Shearer and I are going to try to emulate the masters below....

... by doing a live art demo of our own!

I'll also have some art prizes for folks who bring the most toy donations for the Children's Hospital charity we're supporting during the event. My man Brian Keene will be there, as will the Garrison Carida of the 501st Legion Star Wars

More info at the Comix Connection blog.

So please come by! Last year the event was huge, bug this year it's gonna be like a huge Harlem shake party... minus the Harlem... and the shake....

PEACE!
 Mike

Comix Creator Cookout August 13th!

Hey everyone,

Have you ever eaten at a soup kitchen? Have you ever had to accept food from an charitable organization? Ever have to scrounge for a meal?

I have. As a kid my mother and I were very poor, and we had to accept charity often. It was either that, or not eat. Literally.

I was a proud kid, so I resented it. I remember wearing my hat really low to try and hide as much of my face as possible while waiting in line in front of the Salvation Army, or while sneaking into a local soup kitchen. But I'm damned thankful now that they were available. The people that helped us never made us feel crappy about it. They were just being good people.

There you go. Now you know why I do the Comix Creator Cookout every year. It's nothing compared to the charity I received growing up. It's my humble "thank you" to all those folks that gave me a free meal.

I'm getting ready for this year's Comix Creator Cookout, which is being held this Saturday, the 13th. It's really the only public appearance I do anymore. I love it because I get to hang out with the most generous people I've ever met, the comic fans of Central PA! That's not understatement. These folks always go above and beyond when it's time to give.

Bill Wahl, my good friend and the co-owner of Comix Connection, and I came up with the cookout/signing idea the year that Mike Wieringo died and we raised money for the Heroe's Initiative in his name, as well as food donations for the Central PA Food Bank. Since then we've focused on the Food Bank because I think the need there is greater. And, for the reasons above, it's a charity that is close to my heart.

During the event I grill Greek style pork kabobs, burgers, and hotdogs free to for everyone that comes out.

(Hand made burgers, no frozen junk! And the kabobs are marinated for at least 24 hours! Only the best for my pals ;)

Once someone asked me why I'm "stuck" cooking while everyone is hanging out. I don't see it that way. I'm not "stuck" doing anything! It's my pleasure and honor to cook for these folks. It's my "thanks"to them for helping to support the Food bank and feed people who need it.

My pals Brian Keene, Jesus Gonzalez, and Dirk Shearer will be there signing their great novels, comics, and art prints.

(sorry, no pic of Dirk. Just Jesus, Brian, and me)

If you're in or around the Central PA area, please come out. Bring canned food donations, and get a free lunch. Hang out and have a good time. I'm giving art away to the top three food donations. Brian, Jesus, and Dirk will also have goodies on hand for folks.

So come out and say "HI". I'll be the guy in the apron ;-)

Best,
Mike

Last Zombie release party & charity event thank you!

Hey everyone,

The Last Zombie release party was a big success, with fans of my pal and writer Brian Keene's coming out in force! Everyone brought out donations, and the Comix Connection guys did a great job of hosting the whole event.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that came out to support Brian, his new book, and the York Rescue Mission! We really and truly appreciate it!

Here's some pics from the event.

Check out all those donations! (Sorry for the trash can, there wasn't anything else big enough to hold all the food people brought!)

Winner of the "Who wants to be a Zombie?" contest, Diane Marquette! This fine lady brought in well over 40 pounds of grub for the food bank!

Me working on the Zombified version of Diana, the world's first smiling Zombie! She requested the popped out eye ;)

And here's the lovely Susan Scofield who won the impromptu "OMG! You got me a cigar!" contest! (Made that one up on the spot, after Susan surprised me with a wonderful Don Thomas candela wrapped cigar! NICE!)

While at the signing I did a Zombie sketch in one of Brian's novels, which he will be auctioning for charity soon. I'll keep you posted.

You can see more pics of the event over on the Comix Connection Facebook page.

Brian's site is here.

Best,
MIke

Who wants to be a Zombie?!

This weekend is the release party for my pal and fellow Yorker Brian Keene's new zombie comic, "The Last Zombie". If you're not familiar with Brian, he's a popular horror novelist and comic writer (More on him here and here.). The man is a Horror master, and his new comic is gonna knock Zombie fan's socks off!

Back to the party. This weekend the fine folks at Comix Connection are hosting the release party for the new series, and I'll be there later in the day to show my support AND to help Brian and the Comix Connection guys collect canned food donations for the York City Rescue Mission. The idea is similar to what he do at the Comix Creator Cookout every year.

This time however instead of just giving out a piece of art for the person with the heaviest donation, I will be drawing a characature of the winner as...(wait for it)....a ZOMBIE!

So if you've ever wondered what you'd look like if you died, and came back after a bit of rotting, then bring as many canned goods as you can carry and come out to the Comix Connection in York this saturday. More details here and here.

Thanks!
Mike

Third Annual Comix Creator Cookout!

Hey everyone!

The third annual Comix Creator Cookout is this coming Saturday, and I'm hoping any of you in or near central PA will be able to make it out.

This event is very close to my heart, and is great fun every time we do it. If you've never heard of it, basically it's a big cook out at the Comix Connection Mechanicsburg, as well as a comic signing. We take donations of canned food and cash for a local food bank. This year I'll be giving away a piece of art to the person with the heaviest donation. We'll also be giving away a bunch of other stuff to folks who donate at the event.

Writers Jesus Gonzalez, Brian Keene, and myself at least year's cookout. Brian and Jesus will be returning again this year!

Seriously, if you're close by you gotta swing by and say Hi. Lunch is on us ;)

Best,
Mike

Comix Creator Cookout SUCCESS!!

The 2nd Annual Comix Creator Cookout was a huge success! We had a great turn out, fed lots of folks, got to shoot the breeze with friends and fans, but most importantly we filled a big barrel full of food donations as well as raising some real cash money for the Central PA Foodbank!

I want to send out a sincere thank you to everyone that came out and helped make this even so great, and help support the food bank. You all warmed my heart, and for that I thank you!!

For lots more Photos of the event, go here.

Can't wait for next year!

Best,
Mike
