Hey Mike,

Were you still considering doing a sketchbook? I know at one point awhile back you were talking about doing a print to order sketchbook. Didn't know if that was still in the works.

Holding a spot on the bookshelf for that one. :)

Actually, yeah! I'm hoping to get them ready to order in a month or so...

fingers crossed ;-)

You probably answered this question before, but what are the benefits of a red pencil vs. a blue pencil? Also when you ink do you use only brush for a piece, your working on?

Mike Hawthorne said...

Well, it's an old animation trick. You use the red pencil for the rough penciling then tighten it up with graphite. You can then scan it as color and drop out the red in Photoshop. Then you have a crisp, clean pencil scan.

Hope that makes sense :-)

Thank you...it does make sense, and about my inking question?

Mike Hawthorne said...

Oh, wow. Sorry. Missed that.

I used to ink exclusively with brush, but now I mix it up a lot now. Brush, croquil, even some technical pen.

best,
Mike

Again Mike

Thank you for all your help. I've been a fan of yours since read the interview in DRAW a while back (very inspiring). I'm amazed of how your style has evolved over the years. I can look at a piece and know who drew it but for you I it takes a bit longer.

Thank you! I appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm fairly stubborn about having the art match the subject matter. Doesn't help me with comic fans and editors, but it feels right to me :-)
