Digital painting demo & my Concept art class at PCAD

Hello everyone,

You may have heard that I'm currently teaching a college class at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. 

The school is pretty fantastic, and best of all it's run by working artists. I'm really thrilled to be there.

Tomorrow is my second class and I'll be doing a live demo on digital painting, and thought I'd share part of the demo here. I'm going to use the following piece as an example.

The class is part of the Illustration curriculum, and the students have already impressed me with their ability and creativity. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens with this group of artists!

The cat is out of the bag - Deadpool

Hey everyone,

Marvel has announced my jumping in as tag-team artist on Deadpool with my good friend Tony Moore. They announced it with style! Just look at the above teaser image from Arthur Adams! Seriously, I remember reading Mr. Adam's comics as a kid and WISHING I could draw like him, so having him do covers for this is just tickling me silly.

Anyway, I can't show any pages just yet but I can shared some pages from my sketchbook. As you can imagine, a lot of sketching and figuring out goes into beginning any new project - and Deadpool was no exception. Here are a few pages of sketches that went into figuring out my approach to the character.

 I'm having a silly amount of fun on this series! Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn have been a great team to work with. They are writing the hell out of this series and, along with our editor Jordan White, are trusting me to do my thing. Which I love.

PS - The series is not going to affect my French books and the college class I'm teaching. The schedules are congruent, and all is good. So, no worries.

PSS - It seems that no sooner did the story hit the media that people started voicing concerns over my not having produced any art for the teaser. This is not because I haven't produced any art. In fact I've already handed in a couple of full issues.

So, again, no worries. I got this ;-)

George Washington fighting Zombies? FUBAR!

Hey everyone,

I can not tell a lie! I drew a cover for the Free Comic Book Day FUBAR special!

The FUBAR PRESS dudes have been killing the Zombie history genre for some time now (pun intended) and now they're bringing their own brand of undead to YOUR local comic shop.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars cover

Dark Horse has posted another Star Wars cover I did for them, this time it's for a Clone Wars digest. So I thought I'd show the process behind it. I have to admit I kind of liked some of the other layouts better than the one they chose, but I do this one told the story best in one image.

Order the New sketchbook!

Hey everyone,

Good news! You can order the new sketchbook at the Comix Buro store. 

The first 900 are signed by me.

Also, the Suart Ng online bookstore carries the Comix Buro sketchbooks. They don't have mine yet, I assume because my book just came out, but I hope they carry it soon. If you're not comfortable ordering from Europe then feel free to contact them and ask them to carry it.

PS - I'm hoping to offer a limited amount of special edition sketchbooks with personalized sketches in them. They'll be pricier than the Comix Buro or Stuart Ng stores, but I'll make them worth it. No news on when this will happen though, and if it does it will be in very limited numbers.

French comic festival Quai des Bulles video tour & interviews

Back from France!

Hey everyone,

I'm back from France where I was a guest of the comic festival Quai des Bulles in beautiful St. Malo, France. I had a great time, and met many wonderful people! Everyone in France welcomed me with nothing but generosity and kindness. I can't thank them all enough for their welcoming me, and all the love they're are heaping onto Oms en Série!


Oms en Série and Niourk were a big hit at the festival, but Comix Buro also debuted my new sketchbook at the show. I can't say enough about how great the book came out! I also found out that people can now order the book from the Comix Buro store. 

I won't bore you with all that happened during my trip, but I'll share some of the highlights.

Personalizing a book for a fan.

In a surprise twist of fate Lada and I  discovered we had the same friend from Philly! Small world. Here is us hamming it up for the camera.

 

On a train from St. Malo to Paris, left to right - My partner on Oms, writer Jean-David JD Morvan, my fantastic editor Elsa Sztulcman, me, legendary artist Olivier Vatine, Ankama publisher and good friend Olivier Jalabert,  and lastly amazing artist (who is also contributing a book to the Stefan Wul line) Mathieu Reynes.

Both Stefan Wul books were in full display at the Ankama booth! I couldn't believe how cool their set up was.

 Just a small part of the large Comix Buro art exhibition area, which was separate from their booth. It was full of amazing original art from many Comix Buro artists as well as work from the folks working on the Stefan Wul books.

So, there you go. My trip in a very small nut shell. Besides St. Malo I spent a few days in Paris and Brussels, but didn't take many pictures. Sorry. Still, I hope you enjoy this small glimpse into my trip.

Appearance at the Quai des Bulle!

Hello,

Just a note to any French fans out there, I will be appearing at this years Quai des Bulles comic festival in St. Malo, France. I believe I'll be floating between the Ankama and Comix Buro booths, with new books at both booths.
