Art show opening tomorrow 8/1

Hey everyone,

I'm having a small art show at the York Emporium, and the opening reception is tomorrow August 1st at 7pm. I'll be doing a short talk (about what I'm not sure yet ;) and then a question and answer session. There will be wine, and cheese, and ART!

I'll have a complete set of the Sweet Science prints as well as some original drawings.

More info here.

Oh, and the complete story to the video below is online now. You can read it here.

Mike

All six Sweet Science prints now available.

My labor of love is finally complete! All six beautiful Sweet Science prints are now available for order.

These museum quality giclées are professionally printed on high quality, 14" x 18" cotton rag paper. The prints will be strictly kept to a print run of 100, and each will be signed and numbered by me.

For those who purchase multiple prints, you'll enjoy a 15% discount on your entire order. In addition to that orders of multiples will only be charged shipping costs of only one print.

So, the more the merrier!

Best,
Mike

PS - Look for an 8" x 10" open edition version of the prints soon!

Sweet Science prints pre-order

Hey everyone,

So, you all know about the Sweet Science prints I've done. The limited edition prints are all going to be about 14" x 18" archival prints on beautiful cotton rag paper. They're stunning, believe me! They'll be strictly limited to 100, so when they're gone they're GONE!

Well, I've decided to do a smaller, open edition version of the prints. These will be 8" x 10" giclée prints on a really nice heavy stock water color paper. I got a small batch of them in, and they're really fantastic! The ink is rated to last 200 years, and the water color paper really enhances the painterly quality of the prints.

They'll be more affordable too, priced at 20 bucks.

The REALLY good news is that I'll be taking pre-orders for the entire series, both open and limited edition, and offering a 30% discount on all the prints! I think I'll make the pre-order period about 2 weeks or so before I start sending orders out.

Anyway, look for more about this soon.

best,
Mike

Sweet Science prints finished - part II!

Inevitably whenever I say something is "finished" I always end up going back into them and rework them. I got a great crit from my pals Erik Swanson and Tomer Hanuka, and here are the changes.

Sweet Science prints finished!!

Hey!

So, I found a little bit of free time to finally complete the last two prints in the Sweet Science series! I'm excited, and happy with how the project worked out.

I'll be offering the limited edition prints on my site. However, I'm planning on an open edition series of smaller prints. They'd be around 8 x 10, but of the same archival quality as the larger limited edition version.

So, stay tuned and be ready to pretty up your walls ;)

Mike

Sweet Science #6 WIP pt1

While on the train to and from New York this past weekend, I got to work on the last of the Sweet Science prints. Sill a good bit to do, but I hope to wrap the series of prints up soon.

I'll change a good bit of this before it's final.

Giclée Sweet Science prints now online!

I'm doing some really high end giclée prints of the Sweet Science girls. I got to go to the printers and see them making some giclée prints, and I gotta tell you they're gorgeous! These things are archival museum quality, and printed on really nice cotton rag paper. These's prints will out live me! ;)

Here's a little bit of info on the giclée process:

The Term : The term  "giclee print" connotes an elevation in printmaking technology. Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.

The Process : Giclee prints are created typically using professional 8-Color to 12-Color ink-jet printers. Among the manufacturers of these printers are vanguards such as Epson, MacDermid Colorspan, & Hewlett-Packard. These modern technology printers are capable of producing incredibly detailed prints for both the fine art and photographic markets. Giclee prints are sometimes mistakenly referred to as Iris prints, which are 4-Color ink-jet prints from a printer pioneered in the late 1970s by Iris Graphics.

The Quality : The quality of the giclee print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.

The Market : Numerous examples of giclee prints can be found in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Chelsea Galleries. Recent auctions of giclee prints have fetched $10,800 for Annie Leibovitz, $9,600 for Chuck Close, and $22,800 for Wolfgang Tillmans (April 23/24 2004, Photographs, New York, Phillips de Pury & Company.)

Anyway, they're now available through the site's store. Check it out. The prints will be strictly limited to a run of 100 per piece, and shipped signed and flat.

Best,
mike

PS - I'm still working on the last two prints in this series, so keep an eye out for that.

Sweet Science #4

I *think* this is done... I think...I may tinker with it before I put it to bed.

Which reminds me, I'll be offering the Sweet Science girls as a series of archival giclée prints in the next couple of weeks. So, keep an eye out for that! ;)

Mike

Sweet Science, Hysteria Vol. 1 Ch. 1 wrap up

Hey all,

Been hard at work on Un-men #7 as well as other side projects. During my signing tour to Philly and NY I was able to work on the Sweet Science while on the train. Here's some more works in progress. If all goes well, I may be done with this print series by Early Dec.

Also, the first chapter of Hysteria Vol. 0 has wrapped up online. Been working on a "cover" for the chapter, for something cool I have planned for the series. Here's the pencils for that.

Read the Hysteria webcomic here

More soon!

Mike

Sweet Science #3 WIP Final pt. II!

Remember when I said I was done with this print? Man, I was SOOOO lying!

I can't leave it alone. I'm still tweaking it, hoping to get it JUUUUUST right. More to come soon...

Sweet Science #3 WIP Final

Here's the final art for the print. I guess I shouldn't say FINAL, as I may still end up changing the background color a bit. However, I'm pretty happy with it. I was really shooting for a very light, cool skin tone and then contrast it with some rich hair color, ornate tatoo, and lots of warm freckles.

I'll make this print available in a week or so. Just want some time to tweak it a bit, and drop it off at the printer.

Now, off to a week of the Un-men and then #4!

Mike

Sweet Science #3 WIP pt3

It's coming along. Been adding more freckles, and working on the tatoo. Drew the tatoo on an overlay, over the original drawing. Then I scanned it, dropped it on the arm and tweaked it till it looked right to me.

So far so good.

Sweet Science #3 WIP pt2

Still fighting with the third print in the series. Some things I like better, like the cooler/lighter skin tone and the freckles, but I'm still not sold on a couple of other things. Expect more changes before this is all said and done, especially once I start on the tatoos. :)

Sweet Science prints for sale!

Hey all,

So, I'm officially making the first two prints in the 'Sweet Science' line available online. I'm really excited about these prints, especially after the reaction to these at the Baltimore Con.

Anyway, I'm using Pay Pal to process orders. Just check over to the right to order. I'll be using priority mail, and mailing them flat in sturdy cardboard envelopes. Each will be signed too. If you get both prints I'll cut you a break on shipping costs by just charging for shipping one print.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Mike

Sweet Science #3 WIP pt1

hey all,

Been working on the third print in the series (in between pages of the Un-men) and figured I'd post some work in progress stuff.

First, if you didn't see the line for this then scroll down ( or follow the link)

  • The line art

  • My first step is usually to set a warm, dark brown of some sort down and do a monotone underpainting. This is an old habit from my oil painting days. In this case I went lighter then normal, and ended up with this peanut butter kind of color, which I can tell you now I don't like. I'll change it later on.

Next, I have a "glaze" layer - which again is a hold over from when I painted exclusively in oils. This skin tone is way too dark, as I wanted to go with a very pinkish light skin tone. I'll change that later too.

Here's the glaze without the underpainting.

Here's where I've left off. I dropped in the hair color and shorts, mostly to see if the skin tone would look lighter with something to contrast it against. It does NOT, hence me wanting to lighten it more.

So, basically everything here will more then likely change a good bit. BUT, this blog's all about works in progress, right? ;)

    Anyway, more soon.

    best,
    mike

    Once again, Sweet Science

I'm actually working on the digital paints for this one now. I'll post work in progress through out the coming weeks.

Also, thanks to everyone that tuned into Fanboy Radio last night! The interview went really well, and Scott/David/Brita were very welcoming and gracious. Thanks to them for having me. I had a great time.

Check out their website for a download of the interview.

    Sweet Science Finals

    Hey all,

Ok, so the printer here is working on the prints. I got back two proof's which came out beautiful!

The prints will be 12" x 18", full color on a really nice heavy stock paper. I'll be selling them for ten dollars, signed. I'll have a small batch available at my booth in Baltimore and will be selling them through the site a week or so after that.

I'll also be doing some painted commissions and selling original art from my comics.

    Hope to see you there!

    Best,
    Mike
