Action Comics!

Hey everyone,

So, if you saw my last post, you know the news. I'm drawing an issue of Action Comics for DC's upcoming Villains event! We're focusing on Cyborg Superman, with some cool twists to his back story.

I'm working with writer Supergirl writer Michael Alan Nelson and the the script is fantastic. There is a tremendous amount of drama and pathos in this issue, and plenty of action.

You can ask your local comic shop to pre-order the issue now, which I believe will be in stores the first week or September.

Enjoy some sneak peeks :-)

Best,
Mike

PS -  For those wondering, this is not affecting my work on Deadpool. In fact, I handed in issue 21 of Deadpool before starting on Action Comics. Also, Declan Shalvey is drawing the current arc (which you should check out!) So no worries.

Advice to a fellow artist - "Don't give it away!"

As you guys know, I've been teaching at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. I love it there, and will be returning in the Fall. I have had some great students, dedicated artists who are ready to learn. As you can imagine they're eager to get working, which some time makes them ripe for people trying to take advantage of them. Recently one of my students asked my advice about a company asking for free illustrations for a "non-profit" project. I wish I could say this kind of request was uncommon, but I've heard versions of it time and time again. I'm going to post my response to this artist here because I think it may be helpful to anyone trying to make a career illustration:

***

 Dear XXXXX

I think you already know my answer. IF they WERE looking to hire illustrators then they would HIRE them, not ask for freebies.

Please bear in mind that a non-profit does NOT mean no one is making money. When people write up business plans for an actual non-profit company they include plans for people's salaries, costs of services, etc. No one would fund a non-profit that did not plan for paying salaries to people working at the company. So people running a non-profit get paid. IF they want to hire an illustrator, they should pay him/her too. Maybe not top rates, but they should offer something other than dreams of potential future gigs.

Let me ask you something. Let's say one of this company's toilets clogged and they were thinking of "hiring" a plumber. Let's say they called a plumber and asked him or her to fix this toilet for free then if the plumber did a good job he or she could fix their pipes in the future should the need arise. How many plumbers do you think would be taking that job?

By working for free you're saying your time is worthless. Is your time worthless? Aren't you investing a tremendous amount of time and money in seeking an education in art? I get paid to teach you because you're paying into the college, right? How long do you think I'd stay at the school if they said "Hey, teach this class for free and if we like how it goes we'll maybe pay you for the next one."?

Try this. Go to a pizza place and tell them you want to try out a whole pizza and if you like it you'll start buying pizzas from them in the future. See what they say.

You're a talented, dedicated artist. But every time you give it away you not only short change yourself, but you short change every artist that comes after you. Simple as that.

Do what you're comfortable with, but please value your time and abilities. Don't give it away.

Best,
Mike

I'm not sharing this to embarrass anyone, nor do I intend to come off preachy. I'm hoping to do one thing; show fellow artist they are valuable.

Please, don't forget that.

Good luck.

You're frien,
Mike

FCBD a huge success!

Hey everyone!

The FCBD food drive at Comix Connection was an enormous success! Seriously, we couldn't have asked for more!

You can read more about it here.

Over TON of food was collected! I'm not kidding, a whopping 2000+ pounds of food was collected at the Mechanicsburg store alone! We don't have a final count for the York store (where I was) but from what I saw it was quite a haul!

You folks are amazing!

Thank you!
Mike

PS - Special thanks to Charles Rutledge who sent a cash donation for the food drive! You rock, man :-)

Free Comic Book Day event: Come out and help those in need

Hey everyone,

This weekend is Free Comic Book Day, and I'll be at Comix Connection in York, PA!

I'll be signing comics and sketching, which is always fun, but for me the event is really my opportunity to help collect food for our local food bank. Frequent visitors to this blog know that this is a charity close to my heart, and I'm always eager to help.

In addition to the free comics, people coming to the event with food donations get extra free goodies from the Comix Connection gang. But the person with the largest donation will get a free piece of art work from me!

More info here.

So, if you're near Central PA, please come by with your food donations. I'll be there with new Deadpool comics, as well as the FCBD edition of FUBAR I did the cover for. I look forward to meeting new people, seeing old friends, and pooling all our efforts to help people who really need it.

Best!

HALO sketches

Hey all!

It was finally announced that Dark Horse would be doing a HALO comic. I have a lot of love for Dark Horse, and think the property is in great hands there!

Months ago I was in talks with Dark Horse to draw the comic. I already had several projects on my plate, from both publishers in the US and France, so the timing was really bad for me. It didn't work out for several reasons, but it was fun to take a shot at the characters.

I have to admit, I've never played the game. So it took a lot of sketching to get familiar with the HALO characters. Here were some of the final designs I did.

Be sure to look for the HALO comics coming soon from Dark Horse!

Best,
Mike
